GIS Community Rebrand

Improving the Digital Footprint of the Texas GIS Community

Compilation of screens saying "Texas GIS Community Meeting"

Overview

Working on the Design, Innovation, and Marketing team, I was asked to come up with a fresh graphic for TxGIO's 2024 GIS community meetings. With a recent logo change and a new palette of colors, this was a great opportunity to showcase how we could better support the GIS community through an improved digital presence. I researched, designed, and presented this feature within a two week sprint as a small but effective step towards a much bigger website redesign.

Heuristic Evaluation

I did some research on how GIS Community Meeting content was currently shared, including on the website, social media, and live at the event. I went through old meeting slides, clicked through the website for meetup specific information, and learned how social media posts are scheduled and what information is being shared by our team's Marketing Specialist. This led to me finding really broken user flows on the website, with sprawled out information that's hidden on random pages.

Problem

In order to support increasing marketing efforts and give the growing community a place to easily access information, a new page needed to be built with an improved digital presence that will enhance engagement and outreach.

Design

Creating the Graphic

While I usually wouldn't start with visual elements, this was the original request and an opportunity to create a brand for the GIS Community Meetings.

I aimed to reinforce the brand personality— innovative, community-driven, and collaborative. I added geographical street elements and used colors from a recent agency rebrand. I built the design out in Canva and handed it off to our Marketing Strategist for easy modifications and use for social media.

Results

My team was immediately on board with the new page, and we even discussed some other issues that came up during the heuristic evaluation. This full concept is in development as part of a complete site redesign and will be launched summer of 2024.
